A few weeks ago Lynn suggested we have a meeting in Amman for the two Arabic speaking branch presidents to meet and discuss common problems and challenges. He felt it would be a good thing for President Ammer.
Since the idea was presented, the plan evolved into a district leaders' training meeting and included Relief Society presidents and branch presidencies. Today we drove to Amman with our leaders from the North Jordan Branch to attend the meeting.
We're a very tiny district--only three branches--so there were only 12 people attending, including district leaders. A small group, but very important in the Middle East. President Hammond explained the order of the church is district leaders -> branch presidents -> members. The missionaries should be a resource, not the source of information and direction. It's a good change. The members are looking to the missionaries to solve everything and they should be looking to their own district and branch leaders and to their Heavenly Father.
We know that the Lord is very involved in what is going on here in Jordan. We're working with some very remarkable, Arabic people. Their life isn't easy, but like Esther in the Old Testament, they have been sent for such a time as this. We call them "people for our time." It's a privilege to be associated with them. We will do our best to help them learn the order of the Church. Their lives will be blessed for it.
