The government in Jordan is very concerned about the education of the poor Jordanian and Syrian refugee children. They feel that education is critical to combat the influences of radical groups. We agree wholeheartedly. On Tuesday we met the the leaders of the General Union of Voluntary Societies (GUVS) to see if they have any programs that promote education and to get their list of priorities. GUVS works on the national level to coordinate the efforts of all the charities in Jordan. They are a good partner for LDS Charities.
President Amer went with us to translate.
The name of the woman we met with was "Shatha." Lynn kept calling her "Shata" which means "bag" in Arabic. They didn't tell him about the mistake until the meeting was almost over. We all had a good laugh about it. The president of GUVS is a chain smoker so we were glad when he excused himself to go to a meeting with the king.
